The 7 pm problem
Ask any shopkeeper in a dense market when the internet gets worst. It is the same hour the queue is longest. Cloud-only billing chooses that moment to show a spinner.
What offline-first actually means
The bill is created, numbered and printed by a local database on the counter machine. The cloud gets a copy when the connection returns. Not a cached read-only mode — a full write path that does not need the network.
What you lose offline, honestly
Card and UPI need the network, so you take cash or wait. Multi-outlet consolidation lags until sync. Aggregator orders queue with the aggregator. Everything else — scanning, billing, printing, stock deduction — keeps working.
How to test a vendor's claim
During the demo, pull the network cable or switch off the router. Then make three bills, take a return, and print. If anything hesitates, you have your answer.
Sync conflicts are the real engineering
Two tills billing offline must not issue the same invoice number. Ask how numbering and conflict resolution work. A vendor who cannot answer this has not built offline-first; they have built a cache.
